IDP Empowerment Trust

IDP Empowerment Trust
NDB Bank has taken steps to assist those affected by the armed conflict that ended last year, to empower them by facilitating them to be engaged in self employments such as carpentry, masonry, house wiring, dressmaking, plumbing etc.

As such, the Bank set up the IDP Empowerment Trust in 2009 with the aim of improving their livelihood through skills development with a seed capital of Rs 10.0 Mn and will ensure the facilitation, accountability and transparency of the projects to be implemented in partnership with organizations that have the capabilities and the capacity to carry out identified projects.

Giving Hope and Empowering Lives…
As an initial project the Trust has partnered with the Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka (VTA) that is engaged in conducting vocational training programmes to those affected by the armed conflict. The trust has already assisted 250 successful candidates by presenting them with tool kits required for the newly learned trade skill, which will enable them to commence their own businesses.

The beginning of their new livelihoods…

An opportunity to reach out...
VTA has trained over 1500 persons during the first phase and the cost of providing tool kits to all successful candidates would cost in excess of Rs 30 Mn.

With more people from the North and East now following these courses the numbers are expected to increase substantially beyond this first phase and the cost of providing all such trainees with tool kits/equipment is estimated to exceed Rs 125.0 Mn. The Trust hopes to raise this amount for the project, thereby empowering and giving hope to many others.

Opportunity was lost for the people of the north and East due to the military conflict. Together, we believe we can reach out and offer them better opportunities to achieve educational and career excellence. They will be able to create job opportunities not only for themselves but also for many others. It will provide them with a livelihood which will also facilitate the rebuilding process that will take place as they settle in their original places of residence.
